WEEKENDER AT THE GRAND HOTEL, SCARBOROUGH

2nd & 3rd October 09

Held at the Grand Hotel, Scarborough in their beautiful newly refurbished Palm Court Ballroom, this was Flipside's first venture into organising a weekender - and we think it was a huge success - if looking at the full floor of happy, smiling rock n rollers is anything to go by, coupled with the positive feedback from many of them. "When is the next one?" - "Wish you would do more of these" and "Great weekend, brilliant groups and fabulous venue" are just some of the comments we received. What a lovely group of people.

So what else can I say?...........Both evenings were equally good as far as excellent music to dance to is concerned.  The Bobcats on the Friday were on form and raised the roof with their wide variety of good rock n roll music. I think the floor was full the whole time they played - two 1 hours sessions - and big Daz with the big personality to match had a good rapport with the audience firing them into action on the floor.

The afternoon record hop was attended by about 35 people which was to be expected as the sun came out which no doubt encouraged folk to enjoy the wonderful fresh sea air and spectacular views of Scarborough town, beach and harbour.

On the Saturday evening it was the turn of Jump & Jive - a band I have only heard once before but we will certainly be booking again. Their routine was loud and lively, fast and furious and everyone loved it. At one point a couple of ladies of their family members who were introduced by the lead singer, got up on the stage and sang with the band as did a couple of lively revellers from the Rotherham area.   Out came the silly masks, wigs and other various garb towards the end of the evening - all adding to the fun party atmosphere. We were delighted with the response from everyone, as all had a brilliant time

DJ Flipside excelled himself by playing many much loved tracks and a good selection of not so well know ones all brilliant to rock n roll, jive or stroll to. At the end of each evening the boppers really came into their own when Rick played a good mix of rockabilly.

We would like to thank the staff at the Grand Hotel were particularly helpful with both the setting up of the event and during the running of it. A special thank for the kind donation of a raffle prize which was a weekend break for two for dinner, bed and breakfast. All the money raised on the evening is being donated to the Scarborough branch of the RNLI. We raised £204 - thank you everyone.

LIFEBOAT WEEKEND IN SCARBOROUGH

AUGUST 09

Another brilliant weekend had by all who joined us.  We were rockin to Ricks music on the Saturday 1st August at the Scarborough Sports Centre which has a great dance floor and bar. DJ Keith from Durham did a guest spot and what a brilliant job he did.  We would have liked to see a few more people there but all who came had a thoroughly good time and asked why we dont do it more often!  Well we would if we had the support so come all you guy and  galls who said you would come and didnt - get yourselves there next time.

On Sunday 2nd August we had been invited by the RNLI to rock n roll on a temporary stage which they set up outside the lifeboat house - and several acts perform during the weekend while volunteers go round the audience with collection buckets.

Our turn was at 2.30pm but unfortunately for us the band on before us got a bit carried away and made us a bit late starting......but WOW when we finally got going it was simply amazing to be up there on stage, sun shining down and wind blowing (the pretty petticoats were certainly billowing).  There was a huge audience all of whom seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the spectacle and of course the brilliant music.  We danced till just after 5pm and in the heat it was quite a feat.  Dancers came from all over the district, York, Selby, Halifax, Durham, Scunthorpe and Doncaster so we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of them for making it a day to remember particularly Eileen and friends from Raynor Rock n Roll.

This is an annual event in the RNLI calender so why not mark it down in your diary for next year - its usually the first weekend in August - subject to a low tide of course.  For further info watch this web site.

Over the two days we raised £360 for the RNLI

THE BLACK CADILLACS AT THE GRAND HOTEL - 27th SEPTEMBER 08

We were really rockin it up to the Black Cadillacs at the Grand Hotel on Saturday 27th September…if you haven't seen them yet you must make a point of looking them up - what a fantastic group. The guys in the group were musically brilliant, friendly, funny and they had the dancers begging for more at the end of the evening…. altogether they did three encores and still they wanted more, but after over 2 hours of performing they just had to finish.

The evening started well with Rick of Flipside playing some popular floor fillers and although there were a few niggles from some about seating all was soon forgotten when the evening got into full swing.

The night had a real party atmosphere - the Rotherham area crowd had brought wigs, masks and inflatable musical instruments - what a riot! Two of the ladies (sorry I didn't get your names but you know who you are) did a 'guest number' with them on stage with the band.

The teds from Leeds and Scarborough were bopping away with great style in a corner of the dance floor and Margaret from York 2000 seemed to manage to dance with nearly every man in the room, lucky lady (she must be very fit!) well done Margaret.

Feedback from the everyone is very positive; with many saying they want to book for next years event which will be a 2 nighter on 2nd & 3rd October 2009 with The Bobcats on the Friday evening and Rock Back the Clock on the Saturday. There will also be a record hop on the Saturday afternoon for those of you who just cant get enough rockin 'n' rolling, jiving 'n' strolling. Sooooooo as we sold out early this year please try to book in as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

A big thank you to Mary and Margaret for selling the raffle tickets - we made £113 for the Scarborough RNLI, and thanks to Lynn for giving me a hand with the tickets on the door.

Liz Wiffen from Scarborough asked us to say thank you as she raised £70.30 through your generosity when she announced she was collecting for a young local girl who has a brain tumour.

We would also like to thank all of you for helping to make it a memorable evening and we look forward to seeing many of you again next year.
